Coal Fired Power Station

The following pages are application notes for monitoring of a coal fired power station

Introduction

It is important for the efficient running of a coal fired power station that the coal is burned at the correct temperature. Too low a temperature reduces the thermodynamic efficiency. Too high a temperature is damaging to the boiler system. For this reason a 40 channel data acquisition system was installed for each boiler to monitor the temperature at various points in the boiler system

Data Acquisition

A NP4000 4000 series data acquisition unit was used with low cost 16 bit data acquisition cards. The NP4000 instruments were chosen because each of the channel was isolated, and since each channel has a cold junction compensation device fitted as close as possible to the thermocouple inputs, the accuracy of the cold junction compensation system was one of the best available.

Post processing and analysis

The data from the NP4000 instruments was fed into a PC running DasyLab. Because of the networked operations, more than one operator display screen could be provided to display the data. A worksheet was created to trigger alarms, and control the rate of combustion.
