Introduction

The RX32-FM receiver unit is a general purpose instrumentation receiver unit capable of receiving and presenting signal levels to a data acquisition system from any of the Keynes Controls cable free sensor systems. The RX32-FM has been developed from the Keynes Controls signal conditioning systems ensuring high reliability for its operations.

The RX32-FM contains all the necessary signal processing to support the decoding of the signals from the vibrating wire interface, strain gauges, voltage inputs, temperature and displacement sensors etc. The output signals from the RX32-FM can be directly connected to most data acquisition or logger units.

The ability to locate the receiver unit away from the data acquisition system simplifies systems deployment by enabling sensor signals from remote locations to be recorded at a single convenient location. The RX32-FM contains a several different network communication ports allowing multiple units to be deployed together. A single logger unit can therefore receive and store information from many sensors from different locations simultaneously. To add more channels simply connect a new receiver to the network.

Operating Principle

The Keynes Controls RX32-FM signal conditioning unit consists of 4 main elements:-

1: Combined Digital FM Receiver and microprocessor unit providing data decoding information from the burst packet transmission information originating from the cable free sensors.

2: Analogue outputs from each receiver channel with the level corresponding to a sensor output reading. 32 cable free sensor outputs are supported within a single device.

3: Digital Communication using the SDI-12 and RS-485 serial ports are available to allow the RX32-FM to be deployed on a network away from the logger and to enable simple large channel solutions to be easily assembled. The SDI-12 interface allows up to 320 cable free sensors to be directly connected to a logger without any need for digital-analogue conversion.

4: Analogue outputs using a low noise 16 bit DAC where the output level represents a sensor input level conversion.

User Display

A 5 digit 7 segment display is provided to aid in the configuration and operations of the receiver unit. The display shows the systems configurations as well as the operational levels of the output channels.

Signal Strength Indicator

The signal strength indicator shows signal strength in the range of 0 to 9. Any signal strength greater than 1 will enable data to be received and processed correctly. The signal strength indicator is also used to indicate when a sensor system is deployed correctly or when a new antenna position must be used.

Power Management

The RX32-FM stores all of its configuration details within flash memory of the microprocessor unit. So as the unit restarts they are instantly available. The RX32-FM restarts at its previous configuration as soon as power is reconnected.

For low power operations simply power off the unit when not required and restart a few seconds before the next set of sensor levels are to be recorded. On restarting the analogue levels on the output channels will be maintained at the levels recorded prior to the receiver being powered off.
